Refresh and Reset

Things have been a bit crazy lately, I've been working out like a mad man trying to lose some weight.  I was getting between 3 and 5 miles a day running in and then throwing in some p90x. Usually the p90x consisted of either Core Synergistics, Plyo X, Cardio X, or Kenpo. Things were going really well, I was feeling the energy come back into form and then life hit.  We were having some trees cut down and a couple of the trees fell on our fence. I was prepared to cut up and remove the trees myself, because this is what was agreed upon to help keep the costs down, but I was not prepared to have to fix the fence along with it.  No big deal though, I saw it as a fun challenge and an opportunity to get the boys involved.  While working on the fence though, I didn't realize one of my boys had grabbed a board with a large nail in it and placed it behind me.  When I turned around, it took several seconds to realize what had happened.  The nail didn't go the entire way through my foo

Jealousy: Thou Art Evil

Image
If you haven't suffered from jealousy, you are either lying to yourself or you just haven't been on this earth long enough.  With the advent of social media, the jealousy conundrum has reared its evil head into our society even more.  I myself am not immune to this terrible emotion. I am a father of three and a husband to an incredible wife, but I see where everyone else is in life and I constantly ask myself why can't I be in that place/situation.  Specifically for me, its about being able to take my family on grand adventures.  Seeing others enjoying RV trips or boating on the lake really tugs at me because those are things I would love to being doing if the financial cards were in my favor.  These things are now about appearance or perception, but about truly getting to experience great things with my family, especially given how short life can be and how moments can be fleeting.  I do my best though and I've found some really great tips to help diminish the intensit

Gratitude: Why It Matters

It is easy to get into a dark place where questioning everything you do is second nature.  With Instagram and Facebook  it is easy to feel down when you see everyone posting about their "perfect" life.  As an avid hunter, I can speak first hand how these social media outlets can either help or hinder your experience.  Every day, I am constantly bombarded by big bucks being harvested or by posts of dads living the good life and an existence that nearly seems absent of actual work and struggle.  Slowly, day by day, I begin to question everything from my daily tasks to my self worth.  I find myself justifying everything and fighting self-doubt on a consistent basis.  In certain situations, like with hunting, I even find myself not enjoying and even loathing the experience.  If you are feeling many of these same feelings that I face, here are some tips to hopefully turn the tide and swing the ship in the right direction. Take a Step Back (Reset) Time is a very important

My Journey: Remembering My First Deer

Image
Happy Monday everyone! Here in Pennsylvania, we are in the thick of Spring Turkey Hunting.  Elsewhere around the country, in addition to turkey, many are hunting spring bear! I have always wanted to bear hunt but could never figure out where to start.  Besides that, here in PA, you can only hunt bear in the fall.  Not sure why that rule exists, but its something we all have to live with.  For this My Journey, I am taking it way back to the first deer I ever harvested.  It is something I'll never forget and something I also hope to share with my little ones someday.  It is probably one of the greatest memories I have with my dad. I started hunting at 12 years old.  In Pennsylvania, it's a huge tradition and sort of a coming of age thing for kids to go through hunter's safety courses and earn their first hunting license.  Since then, things have sort of changed with a new mentored youth program, which I really like by the way.  Anyway, my first year of hunting was a thrilling

My Current Struggles and Why I am not a Failure

Image
Parenting is hard.  I have to give credit to my parents because they made it look easy and I guarantee I wasn't the easiest kid to parent. My brother and I are responsible for many sleepless nights I can only imagine.  All that being said, we all could use a user manual on how to raise our kids.  While it sounds like a blissful idea, lets be honest, the great thing about kids is their uniqueness and a user manual would only create zombies.   I am not the perfect parent; to be honest, most days I'm probably not even a good parent. Most of the time I am OK at best.  Below I'll highlight many of the things I am working on and in a follow up post, I'll share some insights on how I am working on each blunder. Despite my shortfalls, I am not a failure.  When I lay my head down I night and reflect back on the day, I come to realize a few things. One, most days, everyone walks away without broken bones and stitches. Two, we all have a roof over our head and plenty of food on th

Life Coaching: 4 Reasons Why You Should Consider It

Image
Life coaching can seem like an unnecessary added expense. For those who have and utilize it, it is a valuable tool that can help you get to the next level in your life. It can also mean the difference between being happy and miserable. A good life coach will help you work through a detailed life plan. They challenge you to think outside the box and deep within to determine what makes you happy, what you should be doing, and the steps you need to get from point a to b to z. For many, having a life coach can simply mean having someone there to affirm everything they have been doing and where they want to go.  Here are a few reasons why you might want to consider finding a coach. Feeling Unclear Let's be honest, sometimes life gets in the way and can leave us feeling murky or fog brained.  A life coach will help you clarify and gain a better understanding of where you are, whether you are happy, and what you need to do to get back on or stay on track.  Sometimes we just need s
